Make an Impression With Fiberglass

Make an Impression With Fiberglass You can easily turn any flexible/bonus space into a unique, personalized addition to your new home simply by adding columns, moulding, trim, brackets and decorative millwork. A popular choice is using fiberglass columns. What makes fiberglass products unique and cost-effective is they resist splintering, decaying, insect infestation, water penetration and absorption for years of long lasting beauty and performance.

Our designers recommend making these minor enhancements to help add elegance and personality to your new home.

Design Tips:

  • Draw attention to ceiling fans and lights.
  • Add decorative medallions to the top of ceiling fans and light fixtures.

Designer Donovan Davis is a big fan of decorative medallions as accent pieces. "Fiberglass medallions are lightweight and available in a range of styles from ornate to simplistic, to help turn a ceiling into the 'fifth wall' in a room," he said.

Add texture with mouldings. Forget about standard trim, add some pizzazz to your room with textured crown mouldings such as dentil, Florentine and Acanthus Leaf profiles. "In rooms over eight feet tall, don't be afraid to install one-piece built-up urethane mouldings that are five inches or more tall to play off the height of your room," said designer Alan Mascord.

Break up your walls, vertically and horizontally. Offset windows and doors in a room with vertical pilasters, because these decorative pieces add instant elegance to any room. To enhance a wainscot treatment, use chair rail moulding that compliments the crown moulding in the room.

Play up your windows. Surround window interiors with mouldings that help turn the windows into "art for the walls." For rooms with high ceilings, add a decorative crosshead and pediment above the window for a regal look.

Fill up wall space. "Don't hide away your favorite collection of knick-knacks," suggests designer Joanne Loftus. "Instead, create customized shelves for them and display them proudly."

With thousands of molded millwork products to choose from, you can customize every room in your new home.

When it comes to moulding and millwork, fiberglass product lead the industry as a durable, low-maintenance alternative to wood products. Most manufacturers offer a full line of urethane and PVC millwork products in a wide range of collections to fit every architectural style in materials that won't absorb moisture, rot, warp, split or chip. For the beauty of wood without the maintenance our designers recommend using fiberglass.
